My 11 wk old puppy howls (softly) as the squeaky sound comes out of his squeaky toys. Is that normal? It's a little unnerving... Should I stop him? If so, how?

My pup is a Pomeranian so I didn't expect this much howling from him. Also, I live in an apartment building and I don't want his howling to annoy the neighbors!
PS: It's a sad, cry-like howl he lets out after a few squeaks.

It is a natural reaction to have, the noise coming from the toy when it is bitten or squeezed fuels the dog into thinking he's getting somewhere, or that the object is getting hurt, a natural hunting instinct. Really it's a matter of preference, it doesn't hurt anything to let him howl, as long as it doesn't trigger any aggressive behavior. Though if you'd like to teach him to stop, the proccess is quite simple. Sit with him and squeek his toy, before he gets to the point where he lets out a howl, give him a gentle touch on the side of the neck and "sshh" him, or use an assertive "no". Squeek the toy again and repeat the process until the touch and the sound is no longer needed. (Do not, by any means, let the dog take the toy from you until you are ready to give it to him.) Be sure to reward him when you are able to squeek the toy without him howling (I say howling, but any sort of impatient behavior should not be tollerated, be it whining or even a stiff body, either of these should be corrected in the same "touch and correct" manner. Only when you are able to squeek the toy and the dog remains in a calm state has he learned the lesson you are teaching.) You can reward him either by giving him the toy in play, by giving him a treat, or, the best and preferred way, affection. (Affection is not shown through talking, rather by touching, a gentle massage of the neck and back.) He will soon learn that there is no need to be vocal simply by the sound of his chew toy. And you will have many less headaches.

he's just a pup, of course it is normal. he is playing and having a good time. I would encourage it no stop it. Dogs are the best so have some fun playing with him and let him howl and bark as a pup should. It is a good sign, sounds like he is a happy pouch.

I've noticed that different breeds act differently for one thing. My mom has a chihuahua that HATES anything high pitched or that squeaks (including squeak toys) and will actually cry when she is around them. He may be scared of his toys, or could be trying to mimic them also. You may ask your vet, but your best bet is to probably either buy him quieter toys or put him in dog training classes. Hope this helps!!

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/05juU
If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.
It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

He may just be having fun. If he acts skiddish then he is scared otherwise scold him or throw the toy out Good luck!

Heyyyy to Chitown!
Yeah, it's normal. My dog whines at his toy tiger and paws at it when it squeaks--he's "talking" to it. Take it away if it's that freaky, get him something soft and cuddly and silent instead.
