My sons are teenagers but they are both in a very small room and i have just had it plastered but i want nice colours, but want the room to feel and look bigger. I am only putting a triple wardrobe in there and chest drawers and going to build the shelfs. I dont want it to look cluttered.

Light colors, esp if the furniture is dark.
But, mirrors add the illusion of space. And, when you paint, if you put a thin trim on the ceiling where it meets the wall, it will create an illusion of height. Just about a half inch of paint on the ceiling at the "seam"-makes the walls look taller.

My son lives at home while attending college, and he wanted to do his room over to get away from the blue he had in there for several years. His room is also on the small size, so we went with a very pale gray for three of the walls, and papered one wall with a coordinating wallpaper. This helped give the room a bigger look. The window treatments were done in black, and I just used valances so as not to close in the room with drapes. He also used accessories. like art work in black frames, and a black lamp, to break up the room. It looks nice, and it's more grown up, along with having a bigger feel.

Lovely colours together are cream and pale duck egg blue with a bright green/blue/ cream striped blind a neutral carpet. Then change the scheme with different coloured bed throws, I like the ones from Ikea. There are also some interesting lamps that can be clipped onto the wall to save space. My boys also like those big squashy cushions with beads in that can either go on the beds or the floor.

Light colours on the walls - pale blue, cream or similar and a white ceiling. Also, the more floor you can see the larger the room will feel, so take advantage of storage space and the height of the room (shelves) rather than piling stuff up at floor level.

First and foremost, if you want to enlarge a room, keep the ceiling white-- makes it look higher. A lot of great ideas here--- light colors (beige, sage green, powder blue, even a basic cream). The stripe idea is dynamite-- beige and deep cream are probably the best color in a small room, or 2 shades of light blue or green. The darker you go, the more the walls tend to close in on you. And good for you for being such a thoughtful mom!!

Stripes can make a room feel larger. So can painting the ceiling a lighter shade from the walls. If flooring is in your budget, go with a light hardwood or similarly-colored carpet as well.

You don't necessarily have to use light colors on the walls. I used a dark blue (not navy) paint in my 12x12 bedroom, and it was amazing how much bigger it seemed. With cool colors (even darker ones), the room moves outward and seems larger. Warm colors make the walls come in and feel more cozy.

I would use a light green color. Its peaceful/soothing color which is good for siblings. I fine it that light colors brings out the room and make it feel more spacey. Try to minimize the amount of furniture in the room. This is a tendency of many people to feel like that need to add and add, but simplicity is always good.

I have seen a sharing teenage boys room painted lime green with a 6 inch white stripe painted in the middle of the room outlined by black on each side of the stripe. It looked awesome, they had black and white bedspreads and white blinds with a striped black and white valance on the windows. Really cool room.

I have a small spare bedroom and have just painted it a very pale green.
I also put up white blinds instead of curtains and it has really made the room look a lot bigger.
