Unsaturated fat is much better for you than saturated fat. The fat cells in your body are made from saturated fat, therefore if you're trying to loose weight you definitely want to stick to the unsaturated fats.
Unsaturated fats are an excellent energy source, and are much more easily broken down and used (with less byproducts from the reaction) than saturated fats.

Unsaturated fat. Poly unsaturated fat is even better. Saturated fat comes from animal products and is harder for your body to break down. It is not essential to health and is not good for your overall health. Saturated fat raises your cholesterol and hardens your arteries. Unsaturated fat is from plant sources. This is the good fat, this is essential to your overall health since it not only carries fat soluable vitamins such as vitamin E but it also helps combat bad cholesterol. Poly unsaturated fat is even better for you then Mono unsaturated fat. You can tell the difference from saturated vs unsaturated because saturated fat is solid at room temperature, unsaturated is liquid. Crisco and margarin are also saturated fat. They take unsaturated vegetable oil (can be corn, conola, or whatever) and add hydrogen atoms to it. This is called Hydrogenation. The oil molecule then accepts the free hydrogen and then becomes more rigid, saturated and harder for your body to break it down. It is interesting to note that margarin and butter have about the same saturated fat content BUT butter also has vitamins that you do not always get in margarin such as vitamin A. So steer clear of saturated fats, use things like canola oil and olive oil, and if it stays solid at room temperature its probably not good for you. It is always better to use natural products then engineered ones.

Unsaturated fat is nowhere near as unhealthy for you as saturated fat because the latter solidifies at room temperature and is more likely to clog your arteries than unsaturated fat would.

saturated fats trigger the liver to make more ldl (bad) cholesterol. these fats usually come from animal based foods. polyunsaturated fats are not as solid and breakdown easily. polyunsaturated and monounsaturated both lower your ldl (bad) cholesterol and the monounsaturated even raises your hdl (good) cholesterol. and dont forget about trans fats because they also raise your ldl (bad) cholesterol and lower your hdl (good) cholesterol. you can still eat foods with some saturated fats just read the label and make sure to try and keep your saturated fat intake at no more than 10 percent and your overall fat intake at around 30 percent of your daily calories. also if the food label says hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated fats it means hydrogen is added to the fats to make them more saturated, so when you read the word hydronated on the label put the box down and slowly walk away.

Saturated fat is totally bad for you. i mean ofcorse u can eat a small portion of it, but hey dont go eating a lot. it may lead to high cholesterol and blocked arteries. stick to healthy fats such as fish oils found in most oily fish such as salmon. saturated fats is found in almost all ready meal and in butters, lard and fatty animal spreads (just incase u wanted to know) i hope this helps!

Use this simple rule of thumb: If it solidifies at room temperature, don't use that oil.

Forget about all these fancy names.

Same goes for margarine. If it is spreadable, soft then use limited amount because it is oil. It may contain trans. This is bad for your heart..

Butter is solid. But use very little of it. It has other benefits.
