probably not. if you want to know the truth, talk to the dog yourself. then, you can see if your friend was lying or not.

No dog even has the right kind of voice box to do that. Sometimes they can make noises that sound like stuff and then do it again in an effort to amke their owners happy but vocally, it's not the same thing as talking.

Well, without seeing your friend's Irish Wolfhound do this, I can't be sure, but I have heard stories of dogs who learn how to mimic human words, and even seen video clips of some of them. So it is possible.
