What we would tell everyone at our clinic is you have to treat the animal(s), their bedding, the house, and the yard. That way that cant keep reinfesting themselves. We recommended Frontline or Advanatge. Frontline kills fleas and ticks while Advantage only kills fleas. They can usually begin using topical flea meds at about 8 weeks. Be very careful if you use any flea meds from Walmart or places like that. My parents didnt believe me and they made my cat very sick. They put some of the generic walmart crap on him and he started howling in pain and vomiting and I had to rush him in the bathtub and rinse it all off of him. So just beware when you use that stuff because a lot of cats have similar reactions to it. To treat the house I would wash all bedding and toys that you can wash and then vaccuum the house thoroughly. Try using the carpet cleaner that kills fleas, but as soon as you are done dump the bag or container into the trash and immediately put that trash out side in your dumpster and away from the house as much as you can, so that way if any fleas are still alive they have a harder time getting back into your house. Also you need to treat the yard. You can ask your vet what kind of treatment to use so that way it kills the fleas but is safe for your animals to be in. Hope this helps
Oh and fleas dont always go dormant in the winter you have to have hard freezes that last in order to kill them, or they can be just as bad. Year round prevention is recommended in areas that dont have really bad winters.

I would agree with the person above. Use advantage or frontline. Frontline Plus works better(for my dogs) but I'm not sure if you can use it on cats. If you are able to bathe your cat before applying the medicine, Adams flea shampoo from Petsmart, Petco will kill the fleas on the cat instantly, and then the advantage or Frontline is a monthly application. If you don't have instant access to advantage/frontline(sometimes you need a prescription unless you order off the internet), you can buy a topical spot-on product made by zodiac, Adam's or a good product called BIO-SPOT you can buy at Petsmart. Don't buy any others, it will be a waste of time/money. These should help you out until you can get your advantage.

If you buy the more effective (yes more expensive) brands of this type of flea medication it tells you not to let them lick for a short period of time. You should also have someone hold the cat, part the hair on the back part of the neck just above the shoulder blade (where the cat can't reach) and put the liquid on the skin. Then just stop the cat from trying to lick for a few minutes until it has time to soak into the skin.

I just recently had a major problem with a large flea infestation. I got some fogger made specifically for fleas eggs and larve the whole life span of them. and i have shampoed my kitten with flea shampoo and treat em with a good medince when you have fleas on your cat you have to clean the whole house, they live on the floors and hate water. if you give your kitten a flea bath you will notice fleas just falling on your hands searching for dry ground. after i had done the fogging, the bathings and all the treatment plus than i bought him a good kitten collar to keep them away and i have actually not seen any in a while. But if you do fog, its a lot of work to clean but in the end its all worth it,. and i am sure you will feel better. but the only mistery was that my kitten is an indoor cat, never knew how he had them. be aware there are red fleas and black fleas. and I wish you the best:)
God Bless!

If your kitten already has fleas, get some natural flea shampoo. They sell alot of different types of flea shampoos, but the all natural ones are safer than the ones with pyrithryns. Most Petco's and Petsmarts have one or two different all natural brands. Bathe kitty. Start by putting a ring of straight shampoo around her neck and then around her ears, also around her genital areas as well, blocking any entrances to the body for the fleas to escape to. Be very careful not to get the shampoo in your kittens eyes. Then soap up her entire body and let it sit on her for as long as the bottle says. Wrap her in a towel, and during this time you can pick the fleas, if any off of her face, just put them right in a cap of the flea shampoo. Rinse her very well, and then dry her off. Wait about 24 hours and then apply either Advantage or Frontline, once every 30 days, between her shoulder blades, to prevent any future flea problems. Dont use any of the cheaper flea preventives as they have been known to cause severe allergic reactions including seizures and death. You can order Frontline or Advantage online at petshed.com or pick it up at Petco for twice the price. Good luck, fleas suck.

Advantage is AWESOME!!! it keeps the fleas off for a whole month!! and Stops the itching within 24 hours... How is your cat getting fleas? Is he an outside cat? If so i would keep him indoors, There are many feline diseases he can come in contact with!! I hope this was helpful!!

Last summer my cat got flees. I took her to the vet and he gave her a shot and also a supply of flee medicine which worked very well. I now but the medicine at http://www.drsfostersmith.com/. It is less expensive then the vets.

you need to get some good flea medicine. Not that over the counter stuff. We got some stuff from our vet and just had to put it between her shoulders. It would be cheaper to get it online. Make sure you also bomb your house or they will just keep coming back. We went to Menards and got a flea bomb. You will need to leave the house with your cat for a while but its worth it. Flea eggs are not affected by the bomb and they can decide when to hatch so make sure you bomb again about 2 wks. later.

Get the vet to give your cat the flea injection. Some cats are seriously allergic to the store bought flea medicine you put between their shoulder blades.
