Peking was an English corruption of the word Beijing. In recent years, as we've become more 'sensitive' to other cultures, we've started using more proper pronunciations. That is why it took me a few weeks to realize that Bombay, India and Mumbai, India were the same city.

Long before the British colonized China, the name was Bejing. When the Brits invaded China, they changed a lot of city names to suit their own ability to pronounce it. When China came into it's own and the Brits were kicked out, it started reclaiming it's original city names.

Just like we call the City of Roma, Rome, and the Latin countries call New York, Nueva York. It is all how it was translated.
