most died of european diseases from initial contact with traders. In some areas, it was the startling numbers of dead natives that helped convince the others that the missionaries, who were not dying, might be worth listening to.
In the new england region, nearly 80% of native americans were decimated, most just prior to the first european settlement of Puritans from the Mayflower. They were infected by french ships that landed in the area a couple years earlier- and if it weren't for this decimation - it's likely that the first colony in 1620 would have never survived.

Did you know that many Native Americans died from daises carried by the Europeans? More than we killed by the Europeans in conflicts.
