Figure of speech meaning they are easily awaken by noise... They usually never go into such a deep sleep that they dont wake up to sound...unless they are deaf!! Hope this was helpful!!!

Dogs can close their ears??? The sleep alert, meaning that if you walk through your house and your dog is sleeping then they will hear you and wait up.... I guess in a way yes a dog will/can sleep with one ear open

Dogs hear everything, awake or asleep, it is the survival instinct in them. ex breeder
