Well.. you said "4 week year old".. So I'm assuming it's 4 weeks old, which is quite different from 4 years old. Either way, the simple answer, as most have said, is no. If the pup is merely 4 weeks old, and has been removed from its mother, it lacks the social skills and behaviors that the mother would have taught it in that time. Your girlfriend is the new mother, or in the dogs eyes, who should be the pack leader. Unfortunately, if she does nothing to show the dog when it's displaying inappropriate behaviors, she will lose her roll as the leader and the dog will take over. Dogs learn firstly by touch and secondly by sound. When training it not to bite, use your hand as a mouth and your fingers as teeth. A light touch to the neck will redirect its attention, and a noise or a "no" at the same time is often helpful. A firm voice must be had. Not yelling. Just calm and assertive. If you use a friendly voice, the dog will think you're playing. If the dog becomes out of control, hold it by the skin on the back of the neck, (this makes it impossible for the dog to turn and bite you) and lay it on its side on the ground until it has reached a calm and submissive state. Once this is done, reward the dog by massaging his neck and back, but dont allow the dog to get up. It's important that he stay laying in this submissive position while you show it affection. This shows the dog that only when it is calm will he get affection. This type of dominant behavior must be shown by both your girlfriend and yourself. Let the dog know that you are in control and that inappropriate behavior will no longer be tollerated. Another thing to keep in mind is that young pups have a lot of energy to expell, and without proper exercise, they'll turn that extra energy into what usually becomes negative behaviors. Be it chewing on things, barking, getting into things it shouldn't, aggressive behavior, going to the bathroom inside, etc. Daily walks are a must. Especially if the dog is left home alone during the day while the owners are at work. A walk before leaving will help unwind some of that energy from the nights sleep, and a walk upon returning home after the day will help release any built up energy that would have accumulated during the day. I can't stress enough how important proper exercise is for a dogs health, both mental and physical. And for your own and others health as well. The most common behavioral trait formed from lack of exercise is aggression. From mild to heavy. And it will only get worse. It is my firm belief that a domestic dog is never aggressive by nature, rather through lack of proper training. So do your dog a favor and teach it the proper skills to live a happy, healthy life.

I can't believe, this poor puppy, has been taken away from it's mother at such a young age. Tha'ts way too young! Puppies should be with the mother, until at least 12 weeks old. As for the biting, that's what puppies do. No you should not have it put to sleep. There is no reason to! The puppy needs certain nutrients that the mother provides for it. If at all possible, I would give the puppy back to the mother until it's at least 8-12 weeks old, or if your'e thinking about putting it to sleep, take it to the Humane Society, SPCA, or any Animal Rescue instead, and let them give it the proper care it needs, and adopt it out when ready. This puppy deserves a chance at a good and happy life. Please don't put it to sleep!!! Give it that chance!!!

Put to sleep? How can you even ask such a thing? If the dog is biting you, there is probably a good reason. I hope your girlfriend does the right thing and chooses the puppy over you!

Dude, is it 4 weeks or 4 years--your question is vague. If it is 4 years then it is not a puppy! It is probably a good judge of character if it keeps biting you.

Look, we kept Scrappy around and he is the most annoying pup on earth--and we didn't have him put to sleep!

no way. you just need to train it.

there are two different techniques i know off that have worked well for me:

1) whenever it bites flick it once hard on the nose. you have to do it everytime it bites you though. it'll take a little while but it usualy works (with the exception of an australian sheperd).
2)whenever it bites and/or growls, turn it on to itsback so its bellyup and hold it there until it stops biting/scratching/growling and stuff. this is called the dominance technique and works for some.

if your not sure about these or if they arn't working, you can always to talk to the dogs vet, or just call a random vet. they should be be able to give you more ideas that work also.

good luck and just try to be patient

Are you serious?? The puppy is teething, just like a baby does. His teeth are hurting and chewing and biting is making his teeth feel good. Just give him something better to chew on, a hard rubber or plastic toy, Teach him that biting is bad. But you don't need to put him to see just cause he is biting, I think you need to read up on how to raise a puppy.

All puppies bite as they go through the teething stage, this usually ends when the adult teeth come in. To put the pup to sleep for doing a natural behavior strikes me as being excessively cruel.

What if someone wanted to put you to sleep? A 4 week old puppy is too young to be away from Mom-they should be at least 7 weeks but 8 weeks is better.

Maybe the pup is trying to tell your gf something. Animals know us better than we think. You are such a jerk!!!!!!!!!!!!!

John, don't be an idiot. ALL puppies nip at anything near them. They are teething and they are learning. Dogs, like babies, don't come understanding the social intricacies of dealing with humans. Your girl friend (not you!) should start training the puppy. But bear in mind that at 4 weeks, the puppy is still learning from it's mom how to survive.

No, it means its time for you to break up with your girlfriend. Maybe its telling you that you are not the right one for her. Just kidding. It is normal for puppies to bit. When we got a puppy it bit us regulary we had to train our puppy to not bite us. If you put the puppy to sleep your girlfriend would dump you.
