An illegal substance - which a source told The Associated Press was a property contained in jet fuel - was found in an intake manifold of Waltrip's car during inspection Sunday.

NASCAR shipped the manifold to North Carolina for analysis. The manifold supplies the fuel/air mix to the engine cylinders. Adding the substance, called an oxygenate, would boost octane in the fuel, making the engine run better at higher horsepower

So far It looks like an oil substance. It may have been used to enhance the performance of his car. In the long run, it may damage the engine. Proper fluids in their proper places are the things Nascar looks for. Also According to Nascar, there was some different additives in the fuel to burn it better, this would give any car a greater fuel milage advantage. Due to the cars lacking power, leaded gasoline would give teams an equal boost in milage. Lead additives are in the fuel they use today.

If Oil was in the manifold, Oil is combustable and can lead to a very seroius hazard. In NHRA, one driver started combusting oil and could not shut the vehicle down. He tried to shut off the car using the kill switch, it shut off the fuel pump, but the oil was so hot, the engine kept on going. I could just imagine the impact of burning oil in a Nascar car after a wreck. It wouldn't be pretty

According to sources at CNN & SI they said it was a substance found in jet fuel but not jet fuel itself.

It was something to do with jet fuel. It was called specifically by SI.com as a "jet fuel additive."

My take is that the material is just one component taken from jet fuel in a chemical process. I dunno how this was kept under the hood.

I heard it was Astroglide, but I could be wrong. I'm told it's better than canned sterno for a good octane boost! ;)
