Did you have an account with any online game company or enter a contest, or did this check just come from nowhere? Because the time to check the company and validate the check was BEFORE YOU SPENT THE MONEY.

This is a very common fraud, similar to scams claiming you won an international lottery, etc. Report it to your bank, report it to the FBI, report it to your local authorities. Bring a copy of the original letter they sent you with the check and any other correspondence that you had with the company. Heck, go ahead and complain directly to the company that sent you the fake check. Except I bet they really don't exist.

Consult an attorney immediately! There is some kind of scam going on and you are right in the middle of it. I know attorneys charge, but probably less than the fines and penalties the bank will assess.

Good luck! I'm really sorry this happened to you.

Sound to me that you should contact the bank and ask to investigate, and also you should try calling and investigate the company who sent you the check to find out was going on

Depending where you live, you may be safe.

Are you sure the check was good ? Have you called the company who sent the check ? What they say ?

Nope, your agreement with your bank covers just this type of situation. Check the fine print.
