You may not be able to. I was/am terrified of flying. I've flown to California to visit friends, and hated every minute of it. My husband thought I was going to stroke out on takeoff.

Unfortunately, I was unable to take anything to calm myself as I was pregnant at the time.

His thinking was that if I flew, I'd see it's not a big deal and get over the irrational fear. He was wrong.

As far as I'm concerned, I'll drive, or I'll just not go.

In my experience there is only one way to overcome fear and that is with knowledge. I could give you the start of knowledge that will eventually remove your fear. The reason I can do that is I work as an Aeronautical engineer and I worked with the major airliner manufactures from the bottom up. I understand exactly how and why an aircraft flies and exactly how strong they are, how are put together, how much power they have, the triple safety systems and most importantly I know how many people have died in the process of humanity learning to build aircraft. How each crash was and still is investigated until the cause is understood and if needed an effective solution put in place with the manufactures and operators. But if you want to know you will have to give me a good reason why I should spend the time explaining all that to you. I recommend looking it up for yourself? I think you will be very impressed with all the solutions from the findings of crashes that we engineers learn from. Or you could just believe me when I say the modern aircraft is a piece of engineering art and I am in awe of the men who design and build them. I love flying! I promise Engineers always endeavor to perfect the aircraft for its purpose as their seems no reason not to! I am working on a new one right now, my primary objective is to make it as save a possible, so save I expect it will amaze people. I am working on this sort of aircraft for people exactly like you so they will never experience a scary moment like you did. I think it would be a pain to look up all that information to remove a fear that can be avoided. There is other knowledge that can remove your fear but I think the best place you are being told to start looking is in relation to your fear of flying. It is very important not to get distracted from what you find "interesting" and you will most likely find you get off the topic very quickly because fear today is in many aspects of society and I don't know how it is all affecting you. You have a firm start with the fear of flying. Go searching if you come to a dead end start again with what last interested you. God bless.

The only way to overcome your fears is to face them.

Granted flying isn't the cheapest thing in the world to do, but take every opportunity you have and can afford to fly, and just do it.

I used to be afraid of flying. Then I ended up with a job where I was flying about 32 weeks out of the year. Got to a point where I was sleeping from lift-off to touch down.

You can do it, and it will be tough. and everytime you hear a strange noise or experience turbulance, that fear WILL bubble up, but that doesn't mean you've got to succome to it.

A friend of mine had the same problem as you, He had never been in an airplane EVER, So for his b-day I took him for a short plane trip to vegas. Now he has NO fear of flying and says he will never drive to vegas again!!
Bottom line, To get over any fear is to FACE IT! Also look at it as -something stupid- ie: Some people are afraid of driving...are you? nope. Millions of people drive everyday, and some are killed. But flying, Millions fly everyday and yet planes dont crash everyday.
Put one step foward and jump on that plane and enjoy yourself! You will be glad you did.

just do it.

i've flown many times and there's really nothing to fear. sure some things can go wrong, but flying really is a safe form of travel and the real hassle is checking in and waiting for your flight! once you're in the air it's no sweat! also, go to the closest restaurant or lounge once you are at the gate to toss a drink or two back to help you loosen up a bit.
just don't get too sloshed or else they won't let you fly!

take care:)

Well the way I over came my fear of flying was to make sure I sat near a window. This seems counter intuitive but it worked for me, since I could look out side I was able to see everything was all right. Also, I kept my self busy by reading and listing to my iPod.

Just do it until you're not scared anymore. The only way to over come fear is just to do the thing you are afraid of over and over.

I was very afraid of scuba diving (claustrophobic and afraid of not being able to breathe if something went wrong). I took classes in scuba diving and did it until it was second nature and I wasn't afraid anymore.

Just do it...the only way through is through...no avoiding.

When you're scared just think, "so this is what fear feels like...interesting!!" Just live and experience what it is to be alive.

Here's an idea to push yourself to the extreme...take up skydiving. Take classes, watch videos, watch other people do it and then swallow your fear and do it!! You won't die and if you do at least you will have really lived.

Another idea, learn to fly yourself. Call an airport and hang out there. Find out how much flying classes are and take one. If you're still scared, do it again until you get over it.

A coward dies a hundred times before his life is over.

FEEL THE FEAR AND DO IT ANYWAY!!! In my opinion, living life in fear is worse than death. Everyone is afraid of something and everyone faces it anyway.

Often you have to confront your fear in order to overcome it. I know that it is going to be hard but you basically need to fly in order to get over it.

I have also heard of hypnotists that can work wonders.

I suggest you go to American Flyers www.americanflyers.net and have them start you in a simulator then go for a flight in a small plane. Once you feel you are in control you will probably become a pilot. I recommend American Flyers because they are the best flight school in the U.S.A.
