Actually, you cannot apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) on-line yet, though, you can fill out the disability report there. See: https://s044a90.ssa.gov/apps6z/ISBA/main.html You can only apply for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) on-line.

I did this and was pretty impressed by the password protection requirements. I am a benefits advocate and have been working with folks since 1995. I haven't heard of a problem with confidentiality breaches from either my colleagues or clients.

But if it makes you uncomfortable you can still do the paper forms. They'll then be entered into the SSA computer system. Unfortunately, every system has it's weaknesses.
