Every city or county department has different rules regarding police pursuits. Some allow the PIT manuever, where the police car taps the rear corner of the suspect vehicle, causing it to lose control. That's where the problems occur. Once the suspect vehicle loses control, it can collide with innocent people, or cause damage to the uninvolved. Injuries, death, and lawsuits can follow, depending on the state, if they place the burden of responsibility on the police department or individual officer. Some states allow the suspect to sue. Most officers I know would like to end the pursuits as soon as possible, but don't think it's worth the possible loss of life or the inevitable lawsuit. The pursuit policy for my department is basically don't pursue unless the loss of life may result if no pursuit is initiated. Minor infractions are let go and followed by helicopter who coordinates with the ground units. If possible the suspect is picked up later.

I agree but when a police chase is going on, it can hurt a lot of other people on the road. They can't ram a car if there are other cars or people on the street. They don't want to hurt innocent people if they don't have to.

No, There could be a coverage and now and back you may permit the guy flow. yet bear in mind in maximum situations as quickly as the chase starts the suspect is racking up the fees. between reckless employing, working crimson lights furnishings, dashing, now and back leaving the considered of an twist of destiny. Even as much as tried homicide (in the event that they attempt to run over a cop) destruction of info (they attempt to ditch drugs, weapons, ect.) probable Obstruction of Justice. a lot of cases what starts off in a minor matter turns right into a large difficulty.

I hope I am on a city council when you run for police chief. You got my vote!
Here is what blows me away.....if bag guy has a gun pointed at some citizen I am totally justifed in shooting him before he can hurt that person. Why is it that police have to stand by while some nimrod rips thru a school zone at 80 miles per hour driving a weapon that could kill numerous people in on accident? That seems like the bad guy using lethal force to me. We should be allowed to PIT him right away or use lethal force against him.

Couldn't agree more. there is no reason to allow some guy to put the public in danger because he doesn't want to go to jail.
The bad side of that is that personal injury attorneys know that the crook has no money, so if they are going to sue somebody, it has to be the police.

yes, but who wants to get hurt and do the ramming ?
Its a very dangerous situation, but you don't want the perpetrator to get away either...Kinda a no win struggle that eventually leads to death or major destruction...Police chases are difficult decisions to make on the police department , they hope the bad guy would just give up !!!
