Science reduces life's mysteries to molecules, but what about the biggest mysteries of all? Is the universe a product of design? Is there purpose in life's endless unfolding? What clues science can offer are far from dispiriting.

This question was was raised as the cover article of the Deember 28, 1992 issue of Time magazine. I am interested to see if peoples views have changed since then. Apparently many have.

I agree with Marci.
I remember the Time article of which you speak. I will try to find it on the internet because There was something that an astrophysicist found at that time that he said was like looking at God or something like that. I'd like to quote it accurately.
Here is the magazine. It does not include the cover story but another very interesting one Galileo And Other Faithful Scientists. It includes the Popes vindication of Galileo
Now I'm on a mission to find the actual magazine.

It took some doing but I found it! I know probably no one will read this except me but I couldn't stop until I found what I was looking for. The article on page 38 Is titled Science, God And Man. The astrophysicist name is George Smoot.(2006 won the Nobel prize for phisics) His team detected persistent fluctuations in the universes cosmic background radiation. He believed them to be echoes of the Big Bang, the moment of creation. He said to reporters 'This is like looking at God"

God is a one-size-fits-all-questions answer for people who did not have science to investigate and explain how our world and universe works,God is also the pat answer now too for those who wilfully reject what scientific research can tell us about our world and our human existence.
Nobody can have any meaningful knowledge of a God even if a God existed, those who claim to have knowledge of God are pulling a fast one or deluding themselves or both.
A theologian or pastor is no more qualified than any scientist or any plumber to speculate about life after death or God, nobody has any information except what has been made up. The scientist will make his speculation based on likelihood given the evidence, and in the case of life after death or God there is none at all making both so unlikely as to be impossible.

at the risk of sounding like a toddler i'd like to approach this question the othe way round. i recently after moving towards an interest in religion while having a massive interest in modern science and the universe have been kinda thinking its 'god' that tells us the about the universe not science that can explain god. As another member said science explains what we can 'prove' eg feel, touch, and see. I've been reading bits of the bible again after a long time and i personally can see a direct link between the past and the future we know about both from science and from religion. its one and the same just one is seen from the mind and heart and one is seen from the hands and eyes.

It's not sciences job to tell anyone about "God", nor do they try to.
Science is a process for evaluating empirical knowledge; or* the organized body of knowledge gained by this process.
Spirituality is about trying to get in touch with what we feel is behind the processes of the universe.
Religion—sometimes used interchangeably with faith or belief system—is commonly defined as belief concerning the supernatural, sacred, or divine, and the moral codes, practices and institutions associated with such belief. For something to be a belief system it requires followers.
How hard is that to understand.

God, as a supernatural entity, is outside the realm of science. Science deals with the natural, observable, tangible, and empirical.

i grow to be an atheists because of common sense (can not sign up God with the 5 senses) and emotionally, i did not comprehend why the international grow to be so undesirable if God grow to be so solid. i imagine that dissimilar society has 'out-grown' God because of technologies, we may be able to do God-like issues on our personal. the reason they get mad a the combination of politics and faith is because we a a republic u . s . vote people in to workplace to signify our selves. at the same time as the Atheistic attitude is lost the get pissed basically as at the same time as blacks get pissed at the same time as our attitude is lost. There are as many gay Christians as there are fornicating and lair Christians. so it no longer there fault. The atheist with emotional causes for starting up atheist are oftentimes idiots at the same time as the technology minded would properly be snobby and argumentative in accordance to their personality because you'll discover snobby, argumentative people in the church.

Science tells us nothing about God at all.
Sadly in its busyness to explain real phenomena it has not time for detailing the exploits of mythical figures.

Science can't tell us anything about God.
Science can't tell us anything about what happens to human intelligence when we die.
And science can't tell us anything about our origins. These are areas that are outside the purview of science. For a scientist to speculate about these areas, and call it science, is to perpetuate a fraud.
