He recently got neutered (6 days ago) sleeps most of the time and only gets up to eat (very little) and use the rr. Before this he had a good appetite and more active. Should I be worried?? How long should I wait to see if he gets better before I take him to the vet? O BTW he's 11 months old.

I gave him the pain medication for 3 days after the surgery (as the vet told me to do).
So now its been 2 days off the medication.

I would suggest that if after a week of this go back to see the vet. Every animal will need time to recover from surgery, and the local anistesia that was given. Also, as an animal ages, more sleep will accure; also eating less does accure since they no longer grow after a certain time anyway. Their body does not need all the extra food to grow. As for paly, toys and cat nip always work, plus some time with its favorite human.

Hope this helps.

If it were me I'd call the Vet just to be on the safe side.
We had our male cat neutered in November.
He went in at 1 in the afternoon, we picked him up at 3 the same day.
He was pretty much still out of it from being put under until about 11PM that night.
He drank a little water and ate a couple bites of food and then went back to sleep...by the next morning he was back to his old self.
He wasn't put on a pain medication, he really didn't need any he was happy as a clam the next day.

It maybe that some of the pain medication is still in your cats system, but like I said I'd check with the Vet just to be on the safe side.

Good luck, I hope kitty feels better real soon.

You might be a bit worried. It's been ages since I had my cat neutered, so I don't remember the recovery time. How long did the vet tell you to watch for lathargic behavior? I would say within a weeks time, your cat should be feeling a lot better, but it sounds as though he is having a tough time recovering. I would say call your vet to ask if the symptoms are normal at this point. Depending on the vet's response....go from there.

I would call the vet. I hd my guy done not that long ago, and he was kinda like that for 2 days tops. My vet didn't give him any meds at all for his neuter. Neutering can calm a cat down, but yours sounds like he may have something else going on.

After neutering, your cat will be tamer for a while- I took my cat a couple weeks to get mostly back to normal but he will always be calmer now than if he hadn't gotten neutered. I wouldn't worry about it but if you are, just put a quick call into your vet to ease your mind a little.

It sounds pretty normal to me, my friend was a vetenary nurse and when i had my cat Lewie done, she said expect him to be groggy for up to 1 week or so. If he is still really sleepy and off his food after another couple of days i would contact the vet just in case. Good Luck!

It's the shock of the surgery. He'll get better soon. If you're in doubt ask your vet or go to drjon@petplace.com . FREE advise is priceless... As for my Stimpy; the vet lives next door. LUCK
