Technically, no. Sauerkraut originated as a way to preserve an excess cabbage crop. These days, though, most people keep it in the refrigerator after the jar is opened, it's always safer than keeping it in a cupboard. Whether refrigerated or not, always keep it in a cool place.

If it's canned, you don't have to refrigerate until it's been opened. If it came from the refrigerator section, then you should keep it cool before and after opening. It will keep for quite a while in the fridge.

If you boght it in a can, u o not have to refrigerate it until u open it.
If u buy the jar in the cooler section thn U have to keep it refrigerated.
once you opn it up, as long as you keepit refrigerated, it will e good for about 7 day.

How did you buy it? If it's "fresh" it needs to be refrigerated. I make my own, and when the cabbage gets sour, I put it in the 'fridge. In any case, if you bought it in a jar or canned I think you should put it in the 'fridge anyway.

No as long as it is a cool place.I used to make homeade sauerkraut in a crock and left it in my cool basement for months,just scraping off the very top layer before using.Hope this helps.
