The fat controller has given you the basics, as he should as an accident investigator. He hasn't got it 100% right though (no offence fat controller). There different colours used depending on the hazard. If you browse on the internet you will find companies that sell these (Safety Shop is one of many). The main colours used are orange, red and yellow.

In the UK :

Vehicles carrying dangerous goods in packages will be marked with plain orange reflective plates. Road tankers & vehicles carrying tank containers of dangerous goods will have hazard warning plates, partly orange.

They are orange with black writing saying what the cargo is, so the emergency services have a better idea what they are dealing with. This boards/signs are either on the back, or the drivers side of the tanker.
