depends on the color now if your going lighter then yo need to bleach all of your hair then you'll need the 2 colors you want always do the bottom of your hair first the darker colors are better to start off with put up the part you want to do last color the bottom rinse DRY.... then do the top it helps if you have someone to help but in the long run it looks great and shows off personality......come on this is COSMETOLOGY 101

You would foil highlight the top part w/ the redish-brown and than dye the bottom layer w/ the black. Go to a professional hairdresser because if you don't do it right the two colors will bleed into each other but it is really very easy for a hairdresser I do blond on top and brown on the bottom all time.

I think that I'd just go to the hair salon to be on the safe side. I don't know anyone who has the layered dyed hair who does it themselves. I know it's more expensive, but I'd rather spend a little more and have it look good than do it myself and have to pay someone to fix it.

The only thing I can thing that might work to do it yourself is to have someone help you and do it one part at a time. If you do the black part first and do the reddish-brown a different day, then you won't have to worry when you wash it out about them mixing together.
