A tricky question, been dating for almost a year. I know she takes the red envelope - and the good luck it's supposed to bring - rather seriously, so I would not want to be way off. Not sure if it's a good reference, but she is giving her parents several hundreds USD.

i think 88 USD wil be sufficient enuff.. 8 USD is too cheap and 888 USD is way tooooo much.. and since '8' is the lucky number for the chinese, do stick to the digit.. ma chinese guy frens usually give their gfs 88 bux.. so i'm advising u frm personal experience..

Traditionaly, you don't have to give a Red envelope to your girlfriend. So, I'd think this is just a nice gesture. I'd suggest the amount around how much you usually pay for a dinner date. Just give a nice round number to bring luck. My non-Chinese (waiguoren) husband would give me $20 just for fun. (but I don't give hundreds of USD to my parents). Have a happy Chinese New Year!
