Look at Which! who are a consumer company and do comparisons on many products including cars.
They are completely non-bias and simply state facts based on experience and surveys of large numbers of people.
I remember when I used to subscribe to their general magazine that one year the Audi TT was rated the very worst car you could buy. You would think that is crazy but the clearest statistic was that 3 in 4 of them required serious electrical repair within the first 3 months meaning the cars had to be towed back into the shop.
Top cars were almost always the Japanese with Merc and BMW rated around the 60% mark.
It is worthwhile paying a few pounds for this information before spending tens of thousands on the wrong car.

Bmw are usually viewed as the most fun cars to drive. Do you enjoy driving? Is it a passion to throw the car into mountain corners, and feel the seats holding your body firmly in position?
The only drawbacks to the bmw is that they can be very expensive to fix. I know of a guy that had a problem in the main wiring harness...Well it was something like 20K just for the part, not counting labor and installation. Make a long story short, the car was totalled, and he recieved a new one. What if he was out of warranty?
Just test drive both, and make sure you get any extended warranty. The m5 is one of the best cars, I would own one trouble or not!

Although the mercedes build quality has plummeted largely, it is still the better buy. Depending on the model in question the mercedes is a easier manufacturer to locate parts for. On the other end of the scale is the dealers. The merc dealers are not as caring and polite as the bmw's but this depends on the price of the car. I would rather have the mercedes new or used but I have no doubt that the bmw is the more stylish car.
I pose a question then.
Reliability ( mercedes-benz ) or style (bmw)?
good luck on your choice and happy motoring

depends on whether you want to dive into the corporate pond and be a 'chaser' - that is own a BMW. They are excellent cars but I dont like the corporate identity that they ooze and how everyone sees them as such a presige car (when they aren't) - Merc's have something else - but I would by Audi/Merc over BMW anyday - it sais more about you...if you know what I mean

The Mercedes is a very nice car, but the quality of the vehicle shot down when they became a part of Chrysler. I would go with the BMW, as it will require less maintenance and hold together much longer.
