You put one gallon from the 3 gallons to the 5 gallon and it will be 6 gallon and 2 gallon left so you subtract 2 from 6 and you get 4 gallons.

easy,
fill the 3 gal-jug twice and empty into the 5 gal-jug, now you have 1 gal left over in the 3 gal-jug.
Now empty the 5 gal-jug and pour the 1 gal from the 3 gal-jug. Next fill the emptied 3 gal-jug.
Viola, you have a full 3 gal jug and the 1 gal in the 5-gal jug.

Fill the five gallon jug, pour it into the 3g, leaves you with 2g. Make an indicator on the 5g jug at the 2g level.
Pour the 2g into the 3g. Fill 5g jug up to indication level of 2g and then add the 2g from the 3g jug. You have 4 gallons.
