They do make a Formica paint.. I would assume it needs to be sprayed on. There are companies that do it.

But I wouldn't recommend it, I find it hard to believe the paint will not scratch. The formica color is bonded into the material with your original countertop which has a wood backing. Im sorry if that is not the answer you were looking for. I do know and have done resurfacing, where you treat the top of the old countertop and glue new formica to the old one which is just as good and strong as the old. But buying a prefab formica countertop will be just as cheap from Home Depot or Lowes.

My husband does kitchens and baths for a living. THe old formica should peel off with some heat, it's only held on by glue. You can then relaminate the top with new formica in a more modern design. You have to have a bit of talent to do it, but it's not that difficult.

I have the same problem. I've found Bon Ami works the best but not really all that good. I have been asking about replacing the Formica but am told that you can't glue new Formica to the old, it just won't stick. It is really expensive to replace the whole tops so I am just scrubbing! (did you notice that scrubbing rubs out the little gold flecks?)

Old counters lose their top coat and are prone to staining. Bon Ami is good for scrubbing, but to lighten it, use chlorine bleach (yes, I've used it straight). Afterwards you must go back over with Gel Gloss to get the shine back. Gel Gloss comes in liquid or spray.

if it's a store bought Formed one (has a radius on the inside corner going up the backsplash) it's hard to put a new laminate over it.
If it's Flat w. a flat Backspash yiu can glue new stuff right over it. (a nice 90deg angle)
You can glue new down by Deglossing the old stuff cleaning it then using a good quality Contact adhesive
