they are great dogs. I had one for 15 years. They do get a lot of problems though...Oily skin (which leads to scratching and hair loss), bulging eyes, arthritic, eating problems, ear infections... If you have allergies the best dog would actually be a poodle. Poodles do not shed therefore they are hypoallergenic and even someone highly allergic to dogs could have a poodle. Boston terriers have a lot of oils in there skin and produce a lot of dandriff because it causes them to scratch. They are beautiful dogs but do come with a lot of anticipated problems.

There is no better family dog then a Boston terrier. Mine is great with kids. She is good with strangers once she knows they are friends. They don't shed a lot although a few times a year, she seems to shed more often then usual.
They are inside dogs - can't be left outside in heat or cold. They want to be wherever you are. They need exercise but throwing a ball in the yard for 15 minutes plus one walk a day seems to be enough.
Our lives are so enriched by our Boston Terrier.
Their expressive faces are priceless !

Terriers in general are a breed that you need to be ready for before bringing into your home. As far as shedding goes, it's relatively mild, as with most short-haired dogs. (Though they do have non-allergenic dogs that are dander free, a good choice to make if your allergies are severe.) As far as whether or not they're good with strangers is completely up to you. They've been known to have a low to medium tollerance for children, but again, if you know how to train your dog and teach it what type of behavior is acceptable and what isn't, such things can be easily overcome. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that Terriers tend to be active dogs and need lots of excersize every day. But where they Are active, you should know that regardless of how long you may walk them, they still may have a tendancy to be hyper-active, possibly displaying random bursts of energy. Don't let this shy you away from excersizing it though!! Without the proper expelling of energy, the dog could turn aggressive, so make sure you have pleanty of time to do this! They also have a tendancy to have low tollerance toward other dogs, which again, is easily overcome, simply a matter of socializing the dog properly. The only other warning I'd give is that they can have quite the dominating character, more or less meaning stubborn to training. Basically, just don't allow the dog to do whatever it wishes, because it will try. This is a daily process, the dog could care less what you tried to teach it yesterday. Just remember to always focus on the day at hand. With that said.. with proper training Boston Terriers can be a wonderful companion to have. They are very smart dogs and quite affectionate to their owners. Best wishes in whatever your final choice may be!

I have a 1 year old boston terrier, they are great dogs, I have two children who just adore him but he has soooooo much energy, its fun to see who will tire out first my 3 year old daughter or the boston terrier. Our pup could go for a long time bouncing off of things, he is very lovable, He is very clean and he does shed a bit, I do bath him quite a bit though. He only barks when someone is at our door, but he loves it when people come by. if you have allergies to dogs this is not the breed for you!! My mother has allergies same with my sister and her son, they ABSOLUTELY LOVE my boston and even risk getting a bit of hives to play with him. They break out in hives after playing with him for just a bit. My mother has a Shitzu at home that doesn't bother her allergies cause they don't shed, he is a great dog to. I can't say all bostons are great cause it all depends on what the temperment of the dog is and what kind of training they get and how much socialization they recieve when they are pups this goes for any breed, if you raise them right and know what breed you are getting into from the start, done all your research on the breed and know how to train the breed you have and socialize them right from the start you will have a great dog in the end, It all depends on how the owner raises the pup. I also have an american bulldog. Both my dogs are great with my children. I've made sure i socialized them at a really early age, been consistant with their training and constant supervision especially with my children, even though they are great with my kids, they are not allowed to be left alone in the same room as my kids not for a minute cause you just never know when a toddler or any child is going to run up to the dog and grab it by it's ears and cause the puppy to nip at them cause the child hurt them. When I leave the room my dogs are put in their crates or tied to me by their leashes. Good luck on your choice and please do your research on the breed before you get one cause it's a life time commitment, make sure the breed fits your lifestyle cause they have a lot of dogs in shelters because owners didn't have the time or knowledge.

Very few Boston terriers are ever aggressive toward strangers or children. They mostly wouldn't know how to bite a person if they took a class in it. My Boston almost never sheds, her coat is very thin and she needs a sweater outside in cold weather. If you are interested in adopting one, try to work out a ten day test fire with the option to bring the dog back if he or she doesn't work out. Most decent breeders would rather find the best home for their dog than just any home. I absolutely adore my Boston, she is a lot of fun and very playful and active.. but absolutely devoted to her mom and dad. She gets along fine with my mixed breed terrier and loves to play with him. She had a rough start in life so she's very timid outside of our house and yard but has never bitten from fear or shyness. More likely to hide from small children than hurt them. I would have five more Bostons right now if I could. And no, I never have a shedding issue with her.

Bostons are great, but if you have allergies, an animal with hair instead of fur might be your best bet.
Poodles, Bischons, Westies (several terriers) Shih Tzu among others are also great dogs and more hypo-allergenic. Good Luck.

they also have a lot of energy!!!! If they are around kids and dogs as a puppy they should be fine with them, but they do have aggression towards them too.

I think you'd be better with a poodle.
