Any individual alcoholic might never develop it. It is one of a cluster of problems that beset alcoholics. Heart and liver disease is much more common, and could kill off someone long before pancreatitis has a chance to develop. If the person in question is a diabetic, however, he should beware of drinking.

In the etiology of pacreatitis time is not as much a factor as the amount of alcohol ingested and the nutritional state of the imbiber.
