Go for the car. The truck will depreciate faster as the price of gas rises.

Well, the VW is a really nice car. But, having 4 kids myself would not feel safe with them in such a small car. The Tahoe uses a lot of gas though. Have you thought of maybe a Chevy Equinox? Or, the dreaded mini van? That's what we have. Makes life a lot easier. I had a Honda Pilot, and after a few weeks, the kid that had to climb in and sit in the 3rd row always whined. So we traded it in on an Odyssey. No more complaints. Our second car is an 07 Accord, which is larger than a Jetta. My kids are 3,9 12 and 13. When 3 are in the back, it's tight. So with the Jetta being smaller, it'll be even tighter. Of course, if your kids are younger, and you aren't planning on keeping it long, it may not matter. Good luck!!!

My best friend bought a used 99 Wolfsberg edition Jetta (looked like it was in very good shape, interior and exterior) and has put almost as much as she paid for the car into repairs. I'm not sure if she bought a lemon or was getting ripped off by the garage but she was putting a couple hundred dollars into it every month. I think it would be more convenient to have the nice big Tahoe with three kids anyway, not to mention the four wheel drive. Good luck with your decision!

Those 2 options are about as far away from each other as you can get. It's like saying I can't decide between a golf cart and a bus. Anyway, for what it's worth, I've known several people who have owned VW Jetta's and they have been unhappy for the most part. Little things tend to break or malfunction on a regular basis. These cars spend a lot of time being serviced.

Both cars are very sharp. I personally like the Tahoe the most, but would ultimately end up getting the Jetta for pratical reasons in the end.

The Jettas have a smooth ride, quick engine, and are German made. They are smaller, so if you have a tendency to haul large items around this may not be your car. If you're a regular Joe like me, this works out fine. 3 kids could fit easily into the backseat of a Jetta. You don't need a huge SUV for that.

Have you considered something in between? Some of those new crossovers (like Saturn Outlook) seat up to 7-8 people, have four wheel drive and get better gas mileage than a Chevy Tahoe. GMC has a new crossover available, I forget the name - starts with an A - Activa or Achieva or something like that. Some are pretty nice looking.

Get the Jetta if it is feasible for you. The world doesn't need someone else with a truck who isn't going to haul anything and waste gas...however, if you think your kids would be cramped in anything less than an SUV, go for the Tahoe. You should think about if it is possible to get the jetta and still be comfortable, get it. If you think you need the extra space, get the suv. Nobody on here knows your situation well enough to pick for you. Maybe you could get another SUV with a little more personality and get the best of both worlds? Maybe a Toyota hybrid SUV if that is in your budget. Great on gas, the envirnoment, etc. and still plenty of room for the family.

No chevy tahoe! With the way gas prices are going. I would get a jetta wagon. That way you have the room for kids and stowing, it's better on gas and it's still WV so it's cute. If you have long commutes, diesels are great on gas mileage. The WV TDI's are fun. If you have money Mercedes wagons last forever. Most people I know break 200k on those things. Short, in town commutes, why not think about a hybrid?

I don't really like your voting system idea, but whatever floats your boat! lol

OK. VW and Chevy BOTH have reliability problems. So honestly, I'd pick neither of those options. I'd go with a Subaru Outback or Forester. All wheel drive, very safe, very reliable, good on gas, and comparable in price to the Jetta. Lil Angel beat me to it, but she's absolutely right. You just can't go wrong with a Subaru.

i agree with one of those who answered that you should choose something in between the jetta and the tahoe, perhaps a midsize car or a compact SUV would do the job, your going to save more on fuel at the same time its big enough to accomodate your 3 kids, hope this helps

the vw is the way to go . you will be helping the enviorment and have a good car. the fact that you considered the enviorment is great. the cost of being nice to the planet will be a reward to you as you will save money driving the vw. the vw is a good car they prices to repair them is higher but the car last a long time and is well made so go for the vw . if either one is used be sure to have a mechanic check out the car on a rack first . do that with any car you might buy used even if it seems to be only a few months old.
