If you can install ceramic tile, that would be best and looks attractive and is easy to clean. Another option is tin/aluminum or copper - like they used to use on old fashioned tin ceilings. Those are very expensive, though.

You have several options, depending on how much you want to spend.

1. You could install a stainless steel backsplash, have the sheets cut to fit.

2. Tile - just be sure to seal the grout joints WELL or you will have another place for stains.

3. You could also install a copper backsplash, this option would be a bit more expensive. The copper would "age" unless you kept it polished. Some people like that old aged look so that might not be a problem.

4. You could remove the wallpaper, repaint and then have a piece of plex-glass cut to fit the area.

Best Wishes,

Try refacing in terracota or just a coat of regular oil based paint. You can clean and scrub this. Get a real exhaust fan installed that has an exit conduct to the outside.

Anything vinyl, that can be wiped down (kitchen grease tends to collect around the stove.) Its a little more expensive, but worth it in the long run.
