Yes and no. Non-belief in the existence of deities is pretty much the definition of atheism. However, that doesn't truly explain the impact atheism has on someone's life. When you truly give up on the idea of god, you have to replace your belief system with something else. Otherwise you end up with people who have no concern except to do what they want, regardless of the cost to anyone else. I personally favor secular humanism, though I imagine many people just live their lives as best they can.

It is interesting that there arises the concept of the "weak atheist" and the "strong atheist." To me this would simply be force of belief in both cases. One chooses not to go all the way and say God doesn't exist, but he rejects religion outright. This seems more in line with agnosticism than atheism, more of a rational view that admits the possibility in theory but rejects it in everyday practice. To claim, as a "strong atheist" does, that "there IS no God," is to claim omnipotence and assurance that the atheist in question does indeed know everything and can assert with assurance that "God doesn't exist." To me, this is the height of intellectual arrogance, akin to a Christian's assertion that God will strike you down if you do not repent according to a narrow set of beliefs. Therefore, I choose to believe that what an atheist doesn't believe in is religion, not the object of the religion. But it is all belief, because there is no proof and not even an experimental construct that can possibly yield the results that an atheist is looking for if he is to change his position on whether God exists or does not exist.

Many get confused by the difference between not believing in any Gods and Believing that there are no Gods. The first is a lack of belief and the second is a positive belief in a lack. I believe there are no Gods or other invisible ghosty goulies running around.

No, its not quite that simple.

There are over 3,000 gods that humanity has imagined.

To which one are you referring?

Atheism is better described by a lack of belief in any deity or the supernatural.

Personally, I think that I can claim every single deity does not exist, with the same strength that I can claim unicorns do not exist.

I believe that is a fair statement to make. The way it seems is, atheists (atheism) asserts with sure conviction that God does not exist. I think that makes them the most intelligent folks in the entire universe.

It is better not to be sure whether God exists or not. But to be sure he does not exist, that just does it for me. For a person to make that assertion - needs one to know everything that happens on this planet not only this planet, but the entire universe, from the microscopic detail.

No, there are multiple reasons why people lack belief in God.

J.P is correct. They are both different stand points in Atheism. One is strong Atheism the other is weak Atheism.

I would rather say that I have never seen any evidence for the existence of a supreme being. However if someone else want to believe in such that is their right.

Questions like:

Why can't man accept his place in this universe?

That man's existence means nothing in the grand scheme of things. Life on Earth is in fact repeated who knows how many countless millions or billions of times throughout the universe.

What's worse, that no god exists or that humanity is insignificant?

no its just just a simple saying

today for instance a woman at work we where trying to solve a problem to get the work done she fired up its not my fault i didnt say it was we just need to slove it oh you dont know she said ill pray for it
20 mins later shes still praying and saying bless this computer to get it done not doing anything else but praying 20mins left of work mind you she gets up grabs her bag and says im off home now works finished problem still not solved so three other girls and i stayed back in the office for an hour trying to fix it up finally we gave up and went home

ive noticed that when things get to hard or reality shocks them (God people)they shut down. dont fix the problem themself and just pray,

if this god stuff was really true then he gave you a brain to use it but you dont you just pray hoping someone else will do it

The way you put it?, I can see it?, and I will say yes, But not for my self though I know He not only Exit, but he is Living?, though as you see if you don't want to recognize nor see his existence, you will not be able to see how? and where?, HIM(God), lives?,
So, yes its that simple for you but not for me, is simpler to see and feel him everywhere I go, so if I continue doing so, and it works for me, you should do what it works better for you?, don't you think?<<<
