I have two female kittens- both almost a year old- who are both spayed. However, every few weeks one of them starts mounting and biting the other on the neck like a male! All the actions are there! It disturbs me, even though they both don't seem to mind. Is this just an "alpha" thing?

You are correct in thinking that it is an alpha thing. Dominance between animals happens, mostly when there are two of the same sex within a limited space. Unless it becomes very violent, blood is drawn, or the less dominant cat becomes shy to the point of hiding all the time, no problem is shown.

Hope this helps.

Yes it is an alpha thing where they are getting to age where they would be breeding if you hadn't had them spayed.

(the way I remedy this in all my animals is to wait until they breed ONCE before having them fixed (also motherhood calms them down and gives them a better temperament)

I am all for the spaying and nutering of animals but have found that allowing an animal to breed at least once makes for a better animal. (also dogs and cats (female) that have been mothers have a longer life expectancy.

I easily have 2 male cats that attempt this. It has no longer something to do with sexuality, that's how a wild cat shows his dominance in the wild. i imagine wolves do it too. So your male cat is only telling the female to observe out, he's the top kitty in fee! :)

It is a dominence thing...my mothers' cat does it to the dog (he's pretty old, a bomb could go off and he wouldn't notice) but my mom uses a squirt bottle to get the cat to stop because it is pretty disturbing, especially when there is company over!

Yes it is all about domination...who is the the queen bee of the house, I feel your pain my cats do the same thing, but in my case they wait until around 2-3am to make sure I get maximum enjoyment out of their actions!! LOL Got to love the kitties!

She is just asserting herself as the dominant female. As you said, it is just an alpha thing. If she is not causing physical harm to the other, I wouldn't worry about it.

I agree with "the Greatest". Your cats are lesbians. Buy them a cat dildo.
