Self-Expression.
You tell the world what your thinking of, what your wishes are, or what you're dreaming of.
It depends what's going on in the person's mind when he/she's painting. Their emotions will come out in the painting.

Like, the color red is more active and impulsive, while blue is passive and calm.

You might as well ask "what do people get out of breathing?"
Some of us just have the need to put brush to canvas. Ever since I can remember, I've had an urge to draw. (Not that I was any good as a kid, but the urge was still there nonetheless.)
And its been that way since humans were human. Look at all the ancient cave art.
What we get is fulfillment.

I can loose hours in a day once I pick up my brushes, the calmness you feel shows in your work, the excitement of starting a new canvas is overwhelming at times.

It makes them feel fulfilled because now when people walk by they'll see the fresh paint and get jealous.
