Ok, long story short...I lived in Ireland for 2 years (I'm American) where I met this great guy. Things were amazing with us for the most part, except I always felt like a part of him was pulling away from me and he could never tell me how he felt about me. Due to circumstances beyond my control I eventually had to leave and he wasn't ready for a big commitment so I guess we sort of broke up. We hadn't spoken in months (but did text message a bit).
Over the last month we've been talking on the phone more frequently and I thought we were in a sort of "friend" zone. But for Valentines Day he got me a card (I completely forgot about the holiday myself!) where he wrote this NOVEL talking about how he missed me "loads." This is a big deal for him. He never did that much when we were actually together. We "broke up" at the end of July and I've been doing my best to move on, but now this happens.
What's his deal?

One of the problems we had (and the main reason we broke up) was that he was unwilling to come to the States to meet my family. He said it was because he was nervous about the long flight, but in reality I think it was the commitment issue because he has been on flights that are like 3 hours long before and I told him that 7 hours isn't much different (because it isn't, really)

Men are confusing because women look at them with female brains. MEN ARE SIMPLE. Just listen to them.
Stop interpreting what he has to say. For some reason, may women feel the need to interpret men's actions. Just check YA! and see. Tons of questions from women saying "what does it mean when..."
He's not complicated. You're making him compicated.

He obviously misses you! The saying is "absence makes the heart grow fonder". The Valentine I'm sure was a surprise, but why would you have thought to send him one? You overlooked nothing, you parted in July with little emotional contact. Celebrate the card....tell him thank you that it was very nice. I'm betting you will hear more about how much he misses you.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Sounds like he has been thinking about you a lot. It is also good news he opens up more now. Talk to him and ask him how he feels about you. Only he can tell you what his deal is.

Individual behavior, is often, not possible to explain. But, we cannot, from observation, on ONE individual's behavior, alone, (that too, by a single observer, again) draw a general conclusion, to the effect, that, "Men (as a generic community) are so confusing..." Each man is different (in fact, each human, whether observed or observer, is unique!).

Six months has passed and he now declares his affections?! That sounds odd to me. Maybe he's trying to keep his options open and wants to visit you in this country. I'd want to know what's been going on with him during this period. See if he's forthcoming with that information before you make decisions regarding continuing the relationship.

Maybe he regrets the break up and misses you. Maybe he loves you but isn't ready for a higher commitment.
I've never been able to understand my man,
Good luck with understanding yours!

Sounds like he wants what is no longer readily available.
You knew him long enough for this to go further, and he wasn't interested then. I wouldn't waste anymore time with this one.
