Is this true? What are the rules related to this? For instance, can they marry more than once? Can they have children? Does this mean the Roman Catholic church is the only Christian church where the priest can not marry? Thank you.

Yes, a married man can be ordained to the Catholic priesthood in the Eastern rites.

But if a single man is ordained, he cannot marry after ordination.

And if a married priest's wife dies, he cannot remarry.

Priests in the Eastern rites who are MONKS must be celibate. Monks are the only ones in the Eastern rites who are eligible to be bishops. Bishops in the Eastern rites must be celibate, as in the Roman rites.

These priests, by the way, ARE Catholic priests. They are in union with Rome; they simply serve the Church under a different sacramental rite.

So, no, technically it's not true that the Roman Catholic Church is the only church where priests can't marry -- because some Catholic priests can marry.

Yes. However their Bishops must be unmarried. And no they are not the only priests that can marry. As I am very sure my dear and most favorite Y!A answerer; "Father K" will chime in, Anglican priests are allowed to marry as well.

In regards to the Roman Catholic church and priests, I believe that they are indeed the only ones that can not marry.

Roman Catholics (this is actually the "Latin" Rite) believe that celibacy is called for as the priest 'marries' the Church; and the flock is the children. We base this on Matt 19:12, 1Cor. 7:7-9, 7:20. and 7:25-38. Though we have had priest that were married historically, such as our first Pope, St. Peter; all were expected to abstain from martial relations.

NO, Eastern Catholic Priests cannot marry.

If a main is already married when he is ordained to the Eastern Catholic priesthood, he remains married with the same responsibilities to his wife. BUT he can NEVER be a Bishop.

If a married Estern priest's wife dies, he cannot re-marry...he could then be ordained a Bishop, though.

Yes, the Latin Rite Catholic Church is the only church maintaining the example of Christ in the celibate priesthood....and it really is a beautiful thing to see such wonderful men give their COMPLETE lives over to the service of Christ and His Church. The priests in my life are AMAZING men!
