OK. Here goes. Do you really want to teach your preschool child phonics? When he goes to school he will be taught phonics (hopefully) and there are several ways of doing it. I would be tempted to leave it to the teachers.

BUT

Who says you can't teach the child to read? Go on, give them a good 'sight vocabulary'. If you use 'look and say' it won't compromise any future teaching the teachers do and children who go to school with even 50 words may have a permanent advantage. I sent two of mine to school totally able to read and they picked up phonics without a murmur. Interestingly both were very literate and it transferred to their writing. There were no problems.

Good luck.

Since your child is 4 and will be starting school shortly I would contact the school for information on websites they use. I work at a school and a lot of well meaning parents confuse their children by teaching them one style, when the school will teach them a different way.
