Limewire doesn't do the piracy people do.
Limewire T&C asks you not to copy copyrighted material
Finally, this is the natural way the internet goes. You cannot just keep banning everything but find real solutions. The music or film industries are not the law of the internet and they need to (which they stubbornly have been) finding new ways they can market their wares. The physical CD is no longer the major way to get music now and selling music at a price people are prepared to pay is the way forward. They all will have to adopt to the internet not the internet adopt to them.

Its because it is a legal site! It becomes illegal for users to swap copywritten material! This puts the illegalities on the people who are swapping! All limewire or any P2P site works the same! All they do is connect you to another user! Thats also why its easy to get an infection! You dont know what the stranger on the other end is sending! Anyone who cant understand this aint got brain 1!

"Limewire provides a tool and that's were the rub comes in."
But with that logic people could sue Ford, GM and Dodge for providing tools to let people commit hit-and-runs, and bank robbery getaways, etc. It makes no sense. Limewire itself is not any more illegal than an automobile. It's all in the way people use it.

Since Limewire does not support copyright theft (they specifically tell you if the content appears to not have a liscence/ask you if you're going to break copyright with it) the software/company are not liable for what users do with it. You could use Limewire to share perfectly legal files, music you had created yourself for example, or freeware software, it's just the majority don't.
The users are responsible for their actions. You could use Internet explorer to download illegal pornography or commit fraud, Microsoft wouldn't be responsible though, it's you the user who's committing the crime, you just happen to be using their software to do it.

Most likely. I'm sure in time they will.
To the answer above me, Napster was a P2P and they were sued and had to covert to pay. Limewire provides a tool and that's were the rub comes in.

Actually, a lawsuit was filed against them in August. Speculation is they will have to pay hundreds of millions of dollars in fines and potentially file bankruptcy. It's now in the hands of the legal system, which moves slowly.

it's legal to share non-copyrighted material. for example, new bands that just want to get their music out there.
it's not limewire's fault that people violate copyrights.
