Is there a real need to read both books, or are they quite similar in the topics they cover?

Everything you read is helpful. Why don't you try to read some of Hawking's books on the subject of the Universe. You will get the most up to date scientific point of view that way.

A lot of the guys that write about the subject are about ten years behind the current research and thinking because they really are not good enough to understand the current line.

If you've read one book by Schroeder, hopefully you will already understand that he is an idiot. Certainly no need to read the other one to confirm it.

For a good criticism of Schroeder, see here: http://www.talkreason.org/articles/schroeder.cfm

I think it would all right just to read one book on any topic, that way your head won't be full of clutter and you run less risk of encountering ideas with which you may disagree. By all means, limit your reading whenever possible.
