Do they preach their self-righteousness at you, when they should keep it to themselves? Do they get angry when their hypocrisy is exposed? And what can be done more to combat this rising tide of ignorance in society?

Yes. I was raised primarily by fundamentalists. Their attitude toward higher education (college) was that this was worthless knowledge and so they discouraged their children from pursuing higher education. This has done the greatest amount of damage to me in my lifetime. What we can do is to continually educate ourselves, go back to school, get a degree and most importantlly, stand up for knowledge and speak out against fundamentalism.

I am a victim in that I live in Kansas, and I have children. They sneak onto our school board, change the science standards, and our kids have to listen to religious philosophy in a natural science class until the next election when we kick them off the school board and get our science standards back.
But thankfully, I live in a large metropolitan area, where...although I see them quite often....myself and the rest of the Heathens are anonymous enough to avoid their taking God's will into their own hands.

I've never met any extreme evangelicals- the UK is an evangelical free zone.

I am sorry God is not {insert what ever is wrong with you} enough for you. If you do not realize that people are not all like you, that most Christians are decent people who have families, and don't bother anyone. If you are mad, why don't you admit, that YOU are the problem. Things have always been the way they are, It is YOU that are different. and if Christians are bothering you so much, WHAT KIND OF ABOMINATION ARE YOU?

Yes, for those that do, Allah has commanded us that we should cut of their heads, and smite off their fingertips. We must be firm in our beliefs.
