i have mossberg pump, and i've had it for years... it has many geese, and ducks, and pheasents, as well as many other upland birds, and one coyote... for years of great service you'll love a mossberg... if you are into spending too much money for something that isn't going to make you any better you could buy something else... but why?...

You don't mention what you will be using it for.
If for general purpose hunting and informal clays, then it would be hard to go wrong with the Remington 870. They are reliable and inexpensive.
If you plan on shooting sporting clays or other clay competitions as well as hunting then I would look at the Beretta AL 391, it also is very reliable but not inexpensive. The Beretta will start at around $900. You could find a used 870 for around $200 with a new one costing $250 to $300.

How much money do you have? What do you want to use it for?
Remingtons are great especially the 870 wingmaster. If you want a great pump shotgun that you can use for any type of hunting and don't want to spend your whole life savings on try a Benelli Nova. I bought mine for $299 dollars. What I like about it is I can shoot any 12 ga. shotgun shell they make from bird shot all the way to 3 1/2 " supermagnums. They even make a barrel that you can mount a scope on that shoots slugs for deer. If you are rich or have a few grand burning a whole in your pocket buy any Franchi over and under. They are off the hook.
Whoever gave me thumbsdown doesn't know anything about shotguns.

if you want an automatic, it is hard to beat the versatility of a remington 1100 or 1187.
if you want a pump gun, go with the remington 870.

there are shotguns out there that i like more than the remingtons, but as far as availability, interchangeability, and parts availability, they are hard to beat.

also, look in to buying a well taken care of used shotgun instead of a brand new one, will save you a few bucks, and as long as it has been well taken care of, there will be effectively no difference between it and a brand new one.

My 32 year old Remington 870 pump shotgun is still running strong. My 25 year old Remington 1100 is also still going.

For my money it would be a Remington. The Remington 12 Ga wingmaster pump is the choice of most police departments. Take care of it and it will last a lifetime.

Benelli is great, though a bit expensive, and you cant go wrong with a Remington 870.

Purdey, Holland and Holland, and Westley Richards are top names, but their guns tend to cost more that your average house. AyA and other Spanish makers are more in reach, and the Italians are good, too. In the US, Ruger, Weatherby and Dakota are better known for their rifles but make fine guns. But the name is really a lot less important than the fit. I have an LC Smith (Fulton Arms) with tons of sentimental value, it having been used by my father, grandfather and great-grandfather, that is not a good gun for me, because I'm taller than they were, and I'm not going to re-stock it just to fit me.
