Observation of x-rays from lightnings sparked research into lab-produced small sparks to also produce x-rays, which is now a recognised biomedical imaging technique.

There are lots of things that can be learnt from the natural phenomenon of lightning. The above is just one example.

I think the last major help was back when Dr Frankenstein used a lightning bolt to animate his Frankenstein monster.

Since lightning is uncontrolled electricity it is not routinely used in engineering.
