No, if they where all armed alot of the criminaly minded would then try to arm themselves. I believe in the police system in the UK of having unarmed police with armed support units when they are needed.

Dispite figures released by the home office I think its quite evident Gun Crime is on the way up. How many teenagers have been killed this week.
Your everyday bobby is not going to put himself a colleauge or the public at risk without the proppers equipment to deal with the job.
Routine Arming of police would have no effect in this what so ever. Criminal elements allready have guns. I beleive there is a requirement for more armed police but not routine arming.

The British Government are far to namby-pamby when it comes to dealing with criminals. The Police should be given firearms as standard personal protection equipment with personal authority to shoot to stop, not to kill. We are already allowed to use lethal force should the circumstances permit, so what difference would arming us make? It may increase gun crime slightly, but I think in the long run it would increase the innocent's faith in the Police service and increase fear in the guilty. Any criminals out there fancy running from / fighting with an armed British copper?

i think you might find harder criminals may start to arm themselves, but they're probably armed anyway.
i think that police don't need to be armed, for the majority of crime deal with, they don't find themselves confronted with somebody who is armed with a knife or gun.
perhaps there should be more officers trained to carry tazar guns, for when the need arises.

I will assume that you are overseas. Put it this way...had the police smoked a few hoolligans there wouldn't be a dead police officer over there from a friggen soccer riot. If some idiot and 5 of his buddies who are inciting a riot fear that they could possibly die from trying to beat up a cop..they will think twice about doing it. Get with the times and arm those boys!

So if the police can defend themselves would this make things worse? No gun crime does not get worse if police (or citizens) can defend themselves. In the U.S. the cities with the worst gun crime are those with strict gun control laws.
The U.K. has a higher crime rate then the U.S. (see below) and the British have strict gun control laws.

In the US, I think the standard weapon for law enforcement is the Glock 18C. Gun crime is actually reduced in the US because of this.
For example, take what happened in a Utah mall. A kid brings a shotgun in with a bag full on ammunition and starts shooting at people randomly. He kills five people before a police officer assess the situation, takes action, and kills the gunman before he killed anyone else.

Definitely yes! They only people with guns in the UK are the criminals, literally! I've watched the police in the UK tell kids who were drunk and disturbing the peace to go home, and the kids told them to ****off. Can you imagine that happening in either Canada or the States? No wonder so many adult Brits are drunkin' loudmouth football hooligan types cause the system didn't cave their head in when they were young! Fact!

yes they should.
i can't believe the answers you've gotten. "the criminals will try to arm themselves if the police have arms." ooooookkkkkkk. like criminals do NOT arm themselves? that's new.
see, in a country where people might have guns, some criminals tend to wonder, "gee if i try to rob this guy, is he gonna shoot me?" that won't happen in Britain cause the robber KNOWS you ain't got a weapon. and like someone else said, they won't be trying to beat the cops to death with sticks if the cops can defend themselves with some hot lead.
