NB: Americans don't need a passport to enter Canada by car but might need one to get back to the U.S.

I don't think a 3rd cousin is a recognised relationship that can help you achieve anything related to immigration, It may however be helpful if you ever decide to construct a family tree..

It depends where you are from and how you are travelling. If you are an American citizen, you either need a passport or proof of citizenship and photo identification.

If you are flying, you will need a passport. If you are crossing a border by car, you can get by with the proof of citizenship and photo identification.
