The real answer is, there is no way you can avoid hurting his feelings. No one likes rejection, especially when it comes to someone they really like.
However, it is possibe to let him down without losing his respect. And that's important, because he WAY you dump him, will be known to your friends, his friends, and anyone and everyone around the two of you. Plus, it helps to avoid those "cold awkward" situations later.
First, keep in mind not to put too much attention on him, when giving him reasons for the break-up. Don't tell him things like "you just aren't affectionate enough". Instead, try saying "I really don't think you and I click, and mesh well." If there are many reasons for the break-up, you can pick and choose, to find the one that is valid, but less hurtful.
Whatever happens, don't cheat on him, because you haven't got the heart to break up. And don't start going out with another man immediately after the break-up (it looks like you were cheating, and broke-up just TO date the other man).
You might even let him know that you can still be friends, but not until some time has passed, so you can both "get over it".

I'll be honest, we all don't want to hurt anyone feeling by turning them down. Just don't call them back or talk to them without them contacting you first.
I'm going through the same thing with a guy I use to date. I have a bf now and he still calls wanting to go out! I have told him no a million times. I think I'm going to have to hurt him to get the point across though.
Good Luck!

Well, there really is no way to turn a guy down without hurting his feelings, I suppose... But I dunno...
You can avoid turning him down harshly if you don't say something like, "I don't like you! Go away!" Now... that's probably unnecessary.

Feelings or ego?
Listen, there is no perfect way.
This is life.
Now, you can avoid being a total (expletive) by being sincere, picking a good reason, and not ebing wishy-washy.
Make sure to say something positive and sincere.
Then move on.
Life isn't perfect, babe.
He'll get over it.

To some? There's no way to keep from doing harm. You just be sincere. And he's gonna have to get the Picture. But don't let it go on, any further. It can only get worse. Good Luck!

Right now is not a good time for me to be involved with someone. I have too much on my plate to take on even more. I am just happy to have friends in my life right now.

Just be upfront and honest, don't drag it out, tell him you aren't interested in becoming involved with him. It's so easy. Just be very blunt so that your message gets across to him. If he continues to bother you then get a restraining order.
