The Greek letters that make up the word "fish" stood for Jesus-Christ-God-Son-Savior. If you took each letter in the word, it would form the first letter of that phrase. So, it became a secret way of christians identifying each other. It doesnt work in english....theBerean

It was originally a Greek symbol for Christian or Christianity. To avoid persecution, early Christians, especially in Greece, would use the symbol to show they were a Christian, or to show where a Christian meeting place was. The Greek word associated with the symbol is ICHTHYS.
I is the first letter of the word Jesus in Greek.
CH are the first letters (in Greek one letter) of the word Christos ), Greek for Christ
TH are the first letters (in Greek one letter) of the word THeou reek for God
Y is the first letter for Yios (ΥἱÏÏ), Greek for son.
S is the first letter for Soter (ΣÏÏήÏ), Greek for savior
Modern use of the symbol began during the late '60's and early '70's during the so called "Jesus Freak" movement, when some hippies decided to become Christians.

It also represents the Apostles as "Fishers of Men," and the Omphalos Stone at the temple of Delphi (adorned with images of fishes and nets). And it represents the Age of Pisces, which supplanted the Age of Ares.

It is an early Christian symbol for Jesus Christ, it is called the ICTHUS; and each letter stands for a word, in Greek.
IESOUS=JESUS
CHRISTUS=CHRIST
THEOU=GOD
UIOU=SON
SOTER=SAVIOR.
Jesus Christ Son of God,Savior
This is quite an apt symbol as jesus used the comparison of fish and nets to catch sinners,and also the Apostles were mostly fishermen.

It is another heathen sign. The symbol of believers is the menorah. The many branched candlestick. YAHOSHUA said unless we repent and do the first (good) works He would remove our candlestick. (Rev. 2:5) [I don't read about Him removing fish]
