The number before the dot . to indicate the no of speaker and 1 to indicate 1 sub-woofer.

Front Right, Front Left and Centre speakers along with sub-woofer
5.1 additionally has Side left and Side right for a complete surround system

The .1 stands for a subwoofer, the number before the . (dot) for the number of speakers you got. 5.1 means:
5 speakers:
- centre (usually above the tv)
- 2 front speakers
- 2 rear speaker
