Assuming you are being environmentally conscious and this is not a multiple choice homework question put the soup in a bowl and throw it in the microwave. This will heat the soup using less energy than both methods you propose.

Remember a stove creates heat by putting large amount of electric current through a resistance coil which is a lot of power. Microwaves only apply the energy to water molecules in the food so you don't heat anything except for the soup.

If we had to choose a method in your question I would think adding the cold water and then heating would be more efficient, because the soup pan has less metal to heat up and you will also only heat the water you are going to use.

If you boil water in an electric kettle, most of the heat from the element goes into the water.
If you boil cold water in a pan a significant amount of heat passes round the pan heating the room, pan handle etc, you can feel this and even see the heat passing round.
Don't overfil the kettle though!

Probably slightly less energy in the pan, since the kettle will boil, then cool and the water will need re-warming in the pan. But I doubt it makes much difference.

LOL....0'Bama? A tax plan? LMAO.....0'Bama doesn't have a tax plan. He doesn't have the slightest idea what he's going to do about taxes. All he has is campaign rhetoric. Charlie Rangle, the chairman of the House Ways and Means committee is the Tax Man. Charlie thinks if you own a clock radio to get up for work on time, you're rich. Hang on to your hat son, everything you heard from Barry O on the campaign trail was an absolute crock. If you live by a pay check, you're going to get hammered. Barry thinks he's going to stimulate the economy by investing in infrastructure. Well that investment was already done and the municpalities took the money and spent it on other 'PROGRAMS'. The money wasn't invested, it vanished and the bridges are rotting now. Do you really think there is a Democrat in this world who can put a stop to it? Hell no. FDR tried it and he failed too. He couldn't do it until he got the US into the biggest public works project in history, the Second World War. It killed 60 million people. Where is Barry going to get all this infrastructure money from while he's in favor of the bail outs? I'll tell you where...the biggest piece of the budget pie..DEFENSE. He and his Clinton appointees will do exactly what Clinton did, cut the military by 50% and call it a budget surplus. HA HA HA ha hahahaha LMAO. What happens every time the US military is cut? Yep, we get attacked and then the real public works program will begin. Yep, hold on to your hat son, this is going to be one hellluva ride. 0'Bama's tax plan....OMG phuleeeeze.

good question i do the same thing. not sure which one uses much energy tho, id say the kettle uses less, and makes it better if u put a lid on the pan too.
