Malcolm Little. He changed his name when he joined the same religion that eventually got Muhammad Ali (Cassius Clay) and Mike Tyson (a religion that is all but banned in the UK).
He was really a hick who went to the city, got into trouble, converted to the racialist "Nation of Islam" in jail...that's when he became Malcolm X, Little was a slave name.
Then he discovered that his religious leaders were hypocrites, and after a pilgrimage to Mecca he became a "proper" Muslim (and changed his name again). He did this partly because he met all these white Muslims who disproved the racialism he was being fed, and realized that his previous religion was a sham.
Although a contemporary of Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X was more of a religious firebrand than a leader (he was never the head of the Nation of Islam, just one of the better speakers).
But he scared a lot of white people with his call for separatism... And he also appealed to a lot of the segregationists before he finally gave up those ideas.
His autobiography, written with the help of Alex Haley, is fascinating. Haley is an awesome author, and that had to be the longest book I read in high school.

Malcolm X was a Black Muslim Minister and National Spokesman for the Nation of Islam. He was also founder of the Muslim Mosque, Inc. and the Organization of Afro-American Unity.
Malcolm went from being a drug dealer and burglar to one of the most prominent black nationalist leaders in the United States. He was considered by some as a martyr of Islam and a champion of equality. As a militant leader, Malcolm X advocated black pride, economic self-reliance, and identity politics. He ultimately rose to become a world-renowned African American/Pan-Africanist and human rights activist.
