Hello, first off, you CAN drink too much water!!!! I just heard of a person dying because of drinking too much water, and I was like "how is that possible" but it is possible!!! What has been recommended to me several times is that a person drink the amount of water in ounces as would be half their body weight. Now, I imagine, if it would be lower than 8 glasses, that the minimal would be 8 glasses. For example, a person weighing 140 lbs, half their body weight would be 80, so 80 ounces would be the recommended amount of water they consume, or 10 glasses. Hope this helps!

Whilst it is advised that you drink 2 litres of water a day, it is not always necessary to go out of your way to drink extra water as under normal circumstances you should be able to absorb most of the water you need from your everyday intake of fluids.

The whole thing about "Your body needs 2 litres of water a day" is actually partly to do with water companies (the type that supply office water coolers, mineral water etc.) - when experts advised that people should drink 2 litres a day water companies took this and used it in their advertising but excluded the rest of the quote which effectively said "...but under normal circumstances you should be able to obtain this without drinking extra water". Convenient wouldn't you say...

The purported benefits of drinking 8 glasses a day (for skin, body etc.) was actually proven to have little substance on a recent television programme about detox diets, with the programme highlighting the above misquotes.

The secret is - drink water when you feel thirsty!!

It is difficult to drink too much water, at high levels of water intake what tends to happen is that the urine becomes more and more dilute as the fluid input and thus output increase, to keep the body salts in balance. The blood urea will tend to fall to a low level, but this is not harmful.

However, if a massive amount of hypo-tonic fluid is taken in rapidly a potentially fatal condition called water intoxication can develop. Here the normal balance of electrolytes in the body is pushed outside of safe limits. Sodium in the blood plasma becomes diluted this causes cells to take up water, swell and eventually rupture.

3 litres (0.79 gallons) taken all at once would be sufficient for water intoxication to occur.

You should drink 2 liters a day. Any more then this and technically you can start to drown. Osmosis from the water would also draw the natural body salts out of you making you ill.

Keep it simple plus your body will tell you not to drink any more as your stomach expands and you feel full..

You CAN drink too much as this is what sometimes kills pill users. They think they're thirsty so drink gallons and the cells in their brains swell and explode.
But I think you would have to drink a whole lot of the clear stuff for this to happen....

No such thing as drinking too much water - you should be drinking at least 2 litres a day anyway.

The body will just flush straight through what it doesn't need. Unless you have a kidney condition, in which case, listen to your doctor!
