The odd thing is that the hot food you put on the fridge will come to no harm, it being cooled, BUT, it also RAISES the temperature in the fridge for such a time before it cools again that any OTHER food in there will be brought UP to the right temperature for germs to breed, so it's THOSE that will make you ill!

Are we talking about putting hot food onto or into the fridge here? The question does say "on".
Assuming it means "into" the fridge, I think most of the answers are just scare-mongering. Putting hot food in the fridge will not make you sick. Even if you take it out and eat it (!) you will survive.

I don't see the point, though, of making the fridge work so much harder, using more energy, and getting all drippy wet because of the condensation from the hot food onto the cold surfaces inside the fridge.

Take advice from anyone who says, allow the food to cool down a lot but it need not be totally cold. Don't let it hang around in a warm place for too long. Wrap it well and keep it refrigerated then if it needs re-heating before eating make sure it is piping hot, even in the middle.

The problem isn't with the food you put into the fridge, the problem is the food already in the fridge which gets warmed up by the hot food next to it. Repeated warming and cooling of food is a really good way to breed bacteria. Wait until it's room temperature unless you've got an empty fridge!

Not sure how true it is that the food would make you sick because it was put straight in the fridge but you would be raising the fridges temperature for a prolonged period of time and hence put you at higher risk as regards other foodstuffs.

I always allow any hot foodstuffs to cool before putting them in the fridge or freezer-making sure that they're appropriately covered while cooling of course.

Hope that helps!

its not the best of ideas! it will raise the temperature of the fridge putting all food stored at risk, bacteria grows fastest around the 40 degrees mark and food in the fridge should be kept around 5! hot food does go through the 'danger zone' when cooling so the best thing to do would be to try and find a cold area for it cool down in, but again, not ya fridge!!!

Basically putting hot food in the fridge means that the temperature in the fridge will go up whilst the food is cooling. The higher the temperature, the faster bacteria multiply, so the moer bacteria there will be in the food you eat. Therefore you are more likely to get food poisoning.

Technically no. The fridge is designed for making room temperature food cold or keeping cold food cold. Hot food will radiate heat, making your fridge work harder and raising the temperature of other foods to an unsafel level. This especially goes for big containers of things with a lot of liquid. It's best to cool down food rapidly by immersing the container in ice water that is rapidly circulating around it.

Putting hot food into a fridge shoves the temperature up, putting any food already stored at risk. Just leave to cool first

Putting hot food in the fridge will raise the temperature of the fridge and may spoil other food in there by allowing bacteria to grow.

Yes putting hot food in a fridge will warm up your fridge. The warmth encourages the growth of bacteria on your food, (the cold slows it down). You could definitely increse your risk of getting sick.
