My family recieves food stamps. I don't think we'd starve without them, but our eating would become very irregular. I have 4 kids (and no, I didn't have them to get my food stamps), two of them babies. I would very much like to go back to work but the cost of daycare prevents me from doing that. Sometimes--actually a lot of times-- I feel like food stamps and public aid is a trap you just can't get out of once your in it

They are ok if the family really needs them but they should not be given to people just too lazy to work. For example, Mom or Dad or both just don't want to work. In Illinois if a family gets food stamps, after so long the parents must have a job.I don't know how long that time limit is but I heard something about it.For people who are unable to work, sure, give them any help they need. What makes me mad is going to the store and seeing someone buying a bunch of snack foods, potato chips and candies, and also buying top dollar steaks and seafood with the food stamps. They need to buy friuts, vegetables, and if they eat meat then meat too but they don't need $12.00 steaks.

I think it's degrading to have to publicly pay for food with food stamps, because too many people perceive food stamp recipients as morally deficient losers. I think the scandal lies elsewhere: there are far too many Americans who are EARNING wages that are insufficient to live on.
That being said, I think it the food stamp program works very well, especially when you consider it's a government program.

This program has been abused from the word go, and always will be, since when is a snicker bar and a coke a meal? Not to mention the selling and trading that happens, Plus, there are plenty of poor people that do not qualify, because they are actually TRYING to support themselves.
Long story short, the food stamp program is a huge waste of taxpayer money

With the current state of the economy, there is a need in many cases for assistance. On the other hand, I have personally witnessed many cases of abuse. For instance, I was in line at the store behind a woman who had four cases of pop, several bags of chips, ice cream treats, candy and much more. There was not one nutritious item in the bunch. After paying for my purchases and heading out into the parking lot, I saw this same woman getting into the drivers seat of a new Lexus. I go to school full time and raise two kids, and I drive a 98 Chevy (which is paid for). I just wonder why, if I'm paying for a Lexus, Why can't I drive it?

i think that instead of giving free food stamps and welfare to people they should force employers to pay a decent wage so that people can survive without so much help. it should only be in extreme cases where people need help and then there should be a limit on how long they can get help and how often. i also don't agree with the earned income credit on income tax. why in the world would you deserve to get back more than you paid in???? i also think there should be a flat rate income tax that every one pays, a certain percent of what you earn, then the rich people wouldn't have all these write offs and every one would be paying the same percent there would be no need to file income tax returns every year because there would be no deductions or write offs and you would only be paying what you owe.
i could talk for hours on this one

The food stamp program and all other types of freebees is an "enabling" system, whereas the recipients can survive with no effort to improve themselves. Whatever lifestyle a person has is of their own making. Those that want a better life seek it, and those that don't accept living on food stamps and crying for more. What upsets me most is that they are not even thankful or grateful. Did you ever hear one say "Thank You"?
Edit: The majority of recipients.

I think it's good for those who don't abuse the use of it. I was on them in the 80s when I was a single mom. But found that it is not a help. And they make it that way so we get off our butts and work for our money. Which is what I did. I knew women who had children just to stay on it. It was originally created for the wars to take care of the widows or the wives of soldiers at war. For some reason we still have it.

we support other countries and give them food, money and aide... we need to focus on home a little bit more. We have just as many if not more homeless and hungry and we are the richest country in the world. We should have homeless and hungry. Whats wrong with this picture?
