The south is generally less educated and more religious. Send a fundie to college and no more fundie.
Most of the fanatics around here would hate any atheist.
Not all of us are ignorant, however. It is changing, yet slowly.

I think that South America is probably not nearly as hung up about this as Americans. Chile recently elected an atheist woman president. Chile is a fairly conservative Catholic country. I seriously doubt if this would ever happen in the United States.

I guess I don't think about it at all. I have probably got some neighbors who are atheist and I just don't know it. I work with or come in contact with some doctors who are professed atheist, I don't like them any less because they are atheist. I have patients who are dying to care for. So I don't stop to ask them about God when I need to get an emergency dose of morphine from them.
