DEPENDS ON THEY TYPE. THE SPEAKER WIRES CAN BE BACKWARDS.
THE STEREO FUSE COULD BE BLOWN WHICH IS MOST LIKELY.
If you have an equalizer, a button could have been hit that stops sound.
The guy above might be right, put in a CD or try the tuner.
If it is not working from a TV output that would be the way it is hooked up.
Something could be in the headphone jack.
There could be a mute button, but the fuse is most likely.

i assume you have turned the sound volume knob/adjustment up and down from 0 to max and still got nothing but static.
please check what is the function setting first. - could be on Aux
In or Mic. make sure it is set for the correct function.
one way to check is to plug in a set of headphones or earphones. if there is no sound either, your stereo may be faulty.

Your question lacks a sufficient amount of information to frame a proper reply.
Is you system a receiver or pre-amp/amp and speakers only? What kind of source are you relying on (CD, DVD, Tape player, turntable.) Are your sources and amplifiers properly plugged in?
Are your positive-negative wires lined up properly? Are your RCA plugs properly seated? What kind of speaker wire do you you? Perhaps you have broken interconnects. Do you have your sources set up to the proper inputs on the back of the processor/pre-amp section of your gear?
I need more details to answer your question.

actually a lot of things, the speakers may be borken and just cause the power light is on doesnt mean its all good, the speakers may be a digital set and your computer only has analog output. just buy a new set, good speakers dont cost much these days or if you really want to keep the only ones then just get them checked by a pro

I would say you might have a blown fuse inside the amplfier. Some one may have turned it up too far, or the amp will not handle the wattage of the speakers & blew the fuse.
